Arizona Prospecting?

I used to live in Seattle, and did a little prospecting up around Gold Bar. Now I'm in the desert, so I am wondering if any GIMers have any info. I know GPAA had a few claims here, but I let my membership lapse.

Nobody doing any prospecting in AZ? Well, I guess I'll just keep all the Gold for myself.

Go to the Bradshaw Mountains. More gold has been found there than any place else in the state. As you drive along I-17 between Flagstaff and Phoenix, look for signs to Lynx Creek, Horse Thief Basin, or just stop anywhere and ask. You can park in Black Canyon City and walk to the river, and a lot of prospectors do that. There is a rock shop next to the restaurant where you can get advice and supplies.

Second choice is American Canyon, 11 miles west of Quartzite and 3 miles north of the freeway. It's the last exit before California. But bring your own water. That area is famous for huge nuggets, 45 ounces or so, but they were all found at bedrock level. Bradshaw Mountains is a much nicer area.

Thanks for the reply. So you don't think I should look for the Lost Dutchman mine?

Seriously, though, I know there is a prospecting store in Mesa. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend. I would like to try high banking or whatever they call the dry technique.

I'll post pictures of any 45 oz nuggets I find.

Got a Metal detector? I found this story here

Last winter I met some folks that told me about Dome Rock in Quartzsite, Arizona, where the ground is covered with quartz and you can still find gold nuggets! So I bought my Whites GMT last January from Kellyco and started hunting around Quartzsite out in the desert from January through the last part of March. It gets WAY to hot to stay in Arizona in the summer time, but when its cooler I take my GMT with the DD searchcoil and my pinpointer out as far as possible.

It took me a few days of trying before I finally figured out that I should get off the desert floor and up into the dry washes of the mountains. Now I pretty much avoid areas where humans can live or camp, so if something beeps I know it is worth diggin for. And for me, that is in the dry washes. If you get down lower most of the targets are foil, and while I did find an old bullet one time, Ive dug enough foil to keep me out of the desert forever!

But it didnt take long for my GMT to find the nuggets up high! Ive found a lot of these in and around Quartzsite. I found a 2.3 gram nugget I wrapped in a nugget spider. The others range in size from tiny to an inch long! But the best part is that I keep finding them

Check out the Vulture Mine just outside Wickenburg. Very Cool Place. There you'll meet quite a few bugs that will inform you of clubs in the area working claims.

I took the back way to Crown King 2 weeks ago, ran into some guys panning that got some small nuggets. Tons of abandoned mines in the area.

BTW, you'll need a jeep and a gun. Lots of crazies out there:confused_ma:

You may look for The Lost Dutchman if you want to. I hear the Apaches don't murder tourists any more.

Why murder the tourists when you can scalp them at the casino?

Nowadays the tourists don't much make it into the casino--they get scalped right at the gas pumps....

There is a lot of placer gold dug in Arizona each year. The area north of Phoenix is very popular.

Here are a few websites you can check out:

The local "rock shop" is selling supplies and giving advice instead of hunting gold.......... ?

HINT !

I get your point, but I'm not looking to get rich. Just looking to do something fun outdoors. Some guys spend thousands playing golf. Not me.

Funny you should say that. I was at Ft mcdowell casino last night and the gas station next door was $3.68/gal. Most places around phoenix are $3.20 or so.
